The Hair Foundation Background

Who We Are:
The Hair Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that provides expert and scientific information about hair health - including care, loss, styling and volume disease and proven hair loss treatments - with no commercial bias, through The Hair Foundation Web site and through its public education outreach.

The Foundation is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees composed of dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons who have studied and treated hair diseases and hair loss and are internationally recognized and respected as leaders in the field.

Our Mission:
To develop the concept of hair health, educate the public, promote the importance of hair health and coordinate and gather the unique expertise of various hair-related organizations to serve this mission.

Hair Health? Really?
Seven out of every ten men and one out of every four women suffer from hair loss and the varying, but often overwhelming, psychological and emotional issues related to hair loss. Nearly one person out of every five has sebhorrhoeic dermatitis, more commonly known as unsightly and embarrassing dandruff. Solid statistics on the prevalence of head lice are hard to come by, but one communicable disease resource nurse recently said, "I would venture to say that you can find head lice in any school district on any given day, just because it is so common."

A quick glance at any newsstand gives an instant understanding of the importance of hair in our society. Despite this near obsession with hair appearance, length, color, volume, style, etc., The Hair Foundation's Web site launch in 2006 provided the first unbiased source of information on the general topic of healthy hair.

Unbiased? Really?
The Hair Foundation is supported by companies with an interest in hair. How can it be unbiased? Companies see value in being connected to a nonprofit, expert and scientifically-based source of information on hair health. The Hair Foundation requires resources to be able to promote its message and its mission. All The Hair Foundation sponsors support the Foundation with the understanding that all content created for the site is reviewed by The Hair Foundation Scientific Review Committee and only that which meets the highest standards is approved and used by the experts that comprise The Hair Foundation Board of Trustees.
